The Center for Hearing and Speech (CHS) is the only full-service resource in Houston, and one of only three facilities in Texas, that teaches children with mild to profound hearing loss to speak rather than use sign language. With the aid of advanced technology, highly trained staff and its listening-based approach to developing communication skills in the hearing impaired, CHS has helped thousands of children develop listening, speaking and literacy skills needed to succeed in the mainstream hearing world.
Thanks to generous donations and an amazing fund raising committee, we have the latest in technology and are in the process of adding another booth to the department. Our Audiology Clinic provides all of the following audiologic services for children from infancy to age 18:
· Hearing evaluations including tympanometry, pure-tone threshold measurements, otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), ASSR, TB ABR and speech discrimination testing
· Hearing aid evaluations to determine which type and make of hearing aid will be most beneficial to the child
· Full service hearing aid dispensary including hearing aid fitting, earmolds, hearing aid performance monitoring, hearing aid repair and loaner hearing aid bank
·
· Cochlear implant programming including the initial hook-up and follow-up for Cochlear Americas, Advanced Bionics Corporation and Med-El products
· Parent education on hearing loss, hearing aid/cochlear implant maintenance, advocacy, educational/communication options and communication strategies
· Consultation with public school personnel, ECI and AI coordinators as well as speech therapists
Free Community Hearing Screenings
· Monitoring of the children within the Melinda Webb Oral School and troubleshooting equipment
· FM system evaluations and fittings
